I’ve decided to split my bigger post and write about best sunset spots in Athens in a separate post. Philopappos Hill (Μνημείο Φιλοπάππου) and Mount Lycabettus (Λυκαβηττός) are the two place that we have visited and both had amazing view. You probably would have amazing view from Acropolis too if you would manage to be there at sunset (probably will be closed already). Another option is Areopagus Hill, as that is before Acropolis entrance gate.
One of the best sunset spots – Philopappos Monument (Μνημείο Φιλοπάππου) & Hill
Philopappos Hill is home to the Philopappos Monument, a now destroyed (in 17th century) white-marble construction that once stood 14 meters (40 feet) tall and 10 meters wide. Evidence has suggested that the Turks were inspired by its architectural elements and used these elements to decorate the Minaret of the Mosque built in the Parthenon. Ornate decorations, pilasters, and statues of Philopappos, his grandfather Antiochos IV and Seleukos I Nikator, were all once used to adorn the monument. Nowadays is a perfect spot for a sunset with not that many tourists around. Just make sure to plan arrive earlier, as we came here already after the sunset and missed the golden hour. Bring your drinks with you so you can enjoy spectacular view. We had a beer while watching the last light reflected from Parthenon on top of Acropolis.

You can find Socrates prison (caves carved in the rock) and amazing view of Athens and one of the best sunsets in Athens.

Another one of the best sunset spots – Mount Lycabettus (Λυκαβηττός)
Mount Lycabettus in Athens, Greece is a popular tourist spot known for its stunning views over the city of Athens (up to the port Piraeus) and its proximity to the Acropolis. Its summit offers some of the best panoramas of the city, stretching from the Parthenon in the Acropolis to the Saronic Gulf and the surrounding mountains. It is also home to a 19th-century chapel and an open-air amphitheatre.
My advice, come early as the queue in the Funicular tends to get long (€10 return ticket) and keep the ticket until the end of the trip. It is possible to climb via stairs, but they are pretty long and can be strenuous on the hot day. The effort is worth it. Also have in mind that sunset is a bit earlier, due to the mountains, so plan at least 30 before actual sunset. We arrive a good hour before and managed to get a front seat facing the sunset direction. Bring some water and if you wish to enjoy a cold beer or a glass of wine – you can bring your own too or buy a cold beer up there. Of course, they are for a premium price and sometimes they might run out of it.
