Route 66 – Amarillo to Albuquerque via Santa Fe – Day 8

Posted on 24th August 20177th January 2018

After the breakfast we went to American Quarter Museum which was very close to our Days Inn hotel.

On our way out from town we stopped for some espresso in Starbucks, which was in Target shopping mall. Finally, real coffee!

Straight after we headed to see the 2nd amendment Cowboy. Huge statue of the cowboy. Funny thing they had a very big sky dancer waving while being being blown next to it.

Then we stopped at Cadillac Ranch. Those Cadillacs were in the mud in the middle of corn field. They were selling spray paint, which you can spray on those cars. One can . You can bring your own I guess. It was quite fun to spray on them, but the wind was blowing it into the face if you were standing in the wrong direction. My hand was all blue, since we got blue paint.

You can see a thick layer of paint on them.

Also it is illegal to paint graffiti outside of the fence. Apparently somebody have ignored it. No idea how they reached it, as the pole is at least 4m high!

On the way we quickly stopped at Vega motel in Vega. It seems the motel is permanently closed, though looks nice from outside.

We finally reached the mid point of Route 66 in Adrian town!

After some driving we hit the end of Route 66 again! We had to turn to the highway.

The scenery changes along the road as we drive. The trees almost disappeared abd only small bushes.

We turned into the Route 66 at Glenrio that is unpaved. I must say it is one of the best stretches of the Route 66! And we entered to New Mexico!

Here that amazing stretch of unpaved road end.

Also since we’ve entered Texas we have noticed that the ground is more red and all rivers look red. Must be due to iron in the soil.

Quick shot from the window at Palomino Motel in Tucumari, which looks nice!

In the same town there was Texaco Trade station. Yet another historic gas station.

Just little but further was Blue Swallow Motel which looks exactly like in the pictures!

Then we stopped at Cita in the center if Tucumcari. This place looks very Mexican.

Then we stopped for lunch at K-BOB’s Steakhouse. We’ve got some IPA beer and amazing Cowboy steaks! So delicious! The steak was .

Quick stop to take a picture of Ranch House Cafe.

Then a picture of some abandoned warehouse.

And just before leaving Tucumcari we stopped at Route 66 sculpture. We didn’t go to the museum there.

Our car next to Route 66 museum.

On the road as usual we saw a lot of trucks passing by.

After some drive we reached Santa Rosa. There is a Car Museum.

To be honest it is not worth it to pay for it, since the cars are packed to each other. Also you cannot touch them or sit in them. Even taking pictures is difficult as those price tags look horrible.

At Clines Corners we decided to do a detour to Santa Fe. The landscape changes very. We could see hills and cactuses.

Santa Fe looked so authentic! It felt like I am in one of those Mexican movies.

The church fits nicely into the town. We also saw an excibition in the park next to it.

All town is covered in clay. Even new build is covered in clay.

Once we finished walking in the old town, we picked our car from parking () and drove to Meow Wolf. It is outdoor gallery if several sculptures. A bug robot looked cool in sunset light.

There was a big wolf and on his leg was a sign US Military.

Thus big spider was awesome! It remind me the one in Bilbao, Basque Republic, next to Guggenheim museum.

When we were driving the sun was setting. As I was expecting the views were amazing. It was hard to capture in the pictures!

I could still see the road lines reflecting our lamp light and the light of the dawn.

We started booking motel while driving to Albuquerque. Same Days Inn Downtown motel on hotels.com was £66.00 and on booking. lcom was £49 for quadruple room.

355 miles (568 km) today. Almost everyday we have to refill our tank for , which is approximately 10 gallons.
